Take Me Home Country Roads

We purchased a charming country home last October. Although grateful for our first home in the suburbs, our old street was becoming claustrophobic, and I (Katie) was itching for room to roam. It was always a difficult transition for me - coming home from a week long camping trip in the middle of beautiful and quiet nowhere, and then having to store our faithful canoe on our postage stamp sized backyard.

My parents made a similar decision when my sister and I were very young. We went from renting a townhouse in south Oshawa to renting a farm house surrounded by beef cattle and barn cats.

Sometimes it was difficult being so out in the country - friends were not close, and I do recall the heaviness of boredom, but my memories remain warm and inviting.

I have wanted for our own children, this same experience of freedom. We are fortunate that the home we are now in is an easy commute to work by car (or bike!) for Steve, and a bearable drive to take the girls to school.

I love being at home. We watch the sunrise over the field across the road, and we have even had our share of some smallish wildlife in our backyard. Our 100 year old house is shaded by a few old lovely trees and the variety of perennials that have been blooming keep me, in particular, quite amused!

The septic hill provided hours of entertainment during the winter months (truly a priceless investment!), and Abby and Natty couldn't wait to get home from school to dump their backpacks on the porch and snowshoe out to their fort in a grove of trees. We have been grateful to our kind neighbour, Wes, who ploughed us out during those awesome snowstorms!

The eventual purchase of a lawn tractor comes with owning a bit of property. Steven and the girls have been enjoying this two hour chore - I have yet to experiment with this new 'toy'...
